With two little men occupying a good percentage of my time I have to grab at the opportunities to share recipes as they present themselves. I have learnt that I am much better at being spontaneous these days than I am at planning things. So whilst my big guy is at creche (no doubt elbow-deep in sand and soaking wet) and my little guy sleeps I am putting fingers to the keyboard to bring you this very quick and easy recipe for pizza. I find that more-and-more I like to cook meals which are heavy on the vegetables and light on the nutrient-hollow things like bread. However this is a combination which I find extremely hard to resist and let's face it indulging on pizza every-now-and-then is one of life's little pleasures!

It's 3pm and as I sit here typing I can hear the drip drop, drip drop of the rain as it falls from our eves onto the garden beds below. Sparrows sit, feathers glistening, in the top of the tree whose sorry branches seem to wrap themselves, like fingers, over the top of the fence at the back of our garden. A soft blanket of grey cloud hangs in the sky. It is peaceful and still and while my babes sleep I'm eager to share with you another of my recipes.

Being a designer can be a bit shit sometimes. Particularly when you have to deal with stuff that isn't design, like admin. I dont mind a bit of i-dotting and t-crossing but sometimes the tools require that you actually carve the damn letters out of stone.. (i am probably better at stone carving than i-dotting) ..I digress..
The reason for today's post is to celebrate my relentless search for the tool which just does what I want (which of course may not be the same as what you want) , and works seamlessly with my other tools. Like the proverbial Estwing to my nail, I today have found a company which understands usability, simplicity and integration (as in Xero integration). The team at Minutedock have done a fantastic job on their time-tracking product, so good in fact I felt the need to share. But moreover, they stepped away from the other solutions to create a product which just addresses the simple, functional elements a business may need when time-tracking, tackling the problem in a very lateral way. Open the page, punch in the barest minimum of information into the one-stop dock at the top of the page, in almost any format you choose, and in a smart-ass kind of way it simply accepts said inputs and designates them to the appropriate job. I can then get on with my day. Great usability trumps anything else in a SAAS product (and most any other product for that matter), and designing for usability and the end user is ever more important when there are 1000 other products out there trying to do what you do. Good on you Minutedock, I look forward to our time together....no pun intended ;)

This post is a little late, but as they say, better late than never! The greatest challenge I have as a blogger is bringing these posts to you on a regular basis, and for me that means once a week. I'm also working on the boys in the back room (Nick, Sam!!), gently prodding and persuading them to find voices of their own (actually they don't need any persuading there!) in order to offer some diversity and interest and to pepper these pages with thoughts not limited exclusively to all things food. And while I'm on the subject this is a great weeknight meal. Quick, easy and really tasty served up with some homemade chutney and a quick green salad.
I hope all had a wonderful weekend. Ours was a productive one in the kitchen and saw Nick whipping up a batch of hot sauce (habanero chillies and green peppers from our garden - we're feeling pretty virtuous right now!) and me finely shredding two heads of cabbage for an attempt at sauerkraut. I must confess that I hesitated to post this recipe as it was one I wrote way back at the end of last year when strawberries were in abundance and I was powerless to their pull. Now the offerings on the shelves of our fruit and vege shop are pale and undoubtedly lacking in flavour having flown half way across the world just to appease the appetites of those who cannot live without summer fruit in winter. However.....it does happen to be summer in the Northern Hemisphere, AND for those of you located South of the equator then frozen strawberries will work just as well. Thinly sliced pear would also be a delicious substitute and should you be a white chocolate fan then give that a go too. Really it is one of those recipes that you can adapt to suit your taste or the contents of your pantry. And as it is grey and wet outside, yet again, then this is the perfect comfort food, served snuggled up by the fire.

Last year, not long before the arrival of our second baby, I received an email offering me the opportunity to write a fortnightly recipe column for the Food & Wine section of Fairfax's regional newspapers. Since having left Fisher & Paykel Appliances, where I was part of a team who started the in-house food blog Our Kitchen, I missed recipe writing, styling and photography and had contemplated starting a blog of my own. So when this opportunity presented itself, as cliched as it sounds, it really was a dream come true for me. I feel incredibly lucky that I can write recipes, style and shoot again and all from our home, fitting it in around our two beautiful boys.

Largely owing to my aversion to shameless self-promotion, combined with a lack of time to work 'on the business', it has only taken us the better part of 3 years to finally define our place in the vast expanse of cyberspace.. thanks for coming to check out what we do.
It is our sincere hope that the blog becomes a bit of a outlet for us, the way we think, work and play, and the kinds of stuff that gets us all fired up, maybe even a repository for the endless stream of ideas that surface from the fabric of the universe on a daily basis...
We love designing stuff, for ourselves and others, but we also love a whole lot of other good things in life too, and we hope to be able to share some stories and experiences here too which shape us as people.
